The humble chamois leather is a vital component of every car owners toolkit, and it fulfills a variety of purposes from cleaning dead flies and bugs from the windscreen through to applying fine, high quality car waxes and polishes. There is absolutely no denying that the chamois leather is incredibly versatile, and although the majority are made from sheepskin and lambskin there are other types of chamois leather such as our deerskin chamois leather. Historically chamois leather was used for glove-making with many pairs of gloves in the 1800's being made from this unique and versatile material. One of the things that made chamois leather such a desirable material to work with was its absorbency, it was discovered that when properly tanned and sculpted it was incredibly absorbent.

The chamois leather first real association with transport began when the gloves of carriage footmen were crafted from this material. They were originally white and were often used for polishing off small scuffs and stains on their carriages, and these gloves continued to be sold to chauffeurs and operators of motor vehicles when they were invented. When windscreens entered mass production the humble chamois leather received a make over from an exclusive glove used by an elite few to a product that was almost essential for any motorist.

Real, high quality chamois leather is so prized in the automotive industry because it is hardly abrasive at all and whilst it works well for polishing and buffing it is equally absorbent and can be used to dry out surfaces as well as polish them. Chamois leather is unique because many of its properties are a result of it being a natural rather than synthetic product; the pores of the skin that is used in the creation of chamois leather are very stetchy and situated very close to one another resulting in a soft, supple, flexible and absorbent material. Whatever type of chamois leather you are looking for we are confident that you will find it on our website. From cloths to mitts to pads we stock a huge number of leathers for a variety of purposes.
